Projects: Galster Wilderness Park Nature Center
SGMRC's newest Nature Center is designed with a focus on environmental and watershed education. Something is planned for everyone! Help us cure Nature Deficit Disorders. The Nature Center is due to open in early 2008.
On the north slope of the San Jose Hills in a heavily urbanized area of Los Angeles County, Galster Wilderness Park is one of the last remaining large woodlands of Southern California Black Walnut Trees. The several hundred acres of habitat are covered by native plants, such as, lemonadeberry (Rhus integrifolia), toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia), along with the unique Southern California Black Walnut (Juglans californica). Areas of Coastal Sage Scrub, another plant community in decline, include native plants, such as, California Sagebrush (Artemisia californica), White Sage (Salvia apiana), California Encelia (Encelia californica), and California Buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum). The two dominant plant communities provide essential habitat for a large diversity of birds, mammals, reptiles, and invertebrates.
Galster Wilderness is one of the last remaining plant communities of Southern California Black Walnut Woodlands, which grow on the North Slope of the San Jose Hills. Large areas are covered with Coastal Sage Scrub , with , is the plant community that dominates the remainder of the park. Both plants communities act as essential habitat for a large diversity of birds, mammals, reptiles, and invertabrates.
Once completed, the Nature Center will host a variety of family, community, and school programs, and multi-faceted
projects for scout and service programs.
What's NEW? Wild Wednesdays is the first in a Series of Programs planned and produced for Galster Park. These successful programs are in
planning for a second season for family and public outreach. Watch for the
start-up of Wild Wednesdays in late June 2008.

invite you to Visit & Volunteer. There are many volunteer
opportunities, plus docent training, here at the Nature
Center. Programming needs are dependent on volunteers to
serve as docents, trail guides, office personnel, program
presenters, and program assistants. We look forward to
